Where digital goes to die...

LET'S GET DIGITAL
I have been producing 'disposable' digital still-image JPG art since the pre-meme Web 1.0 of the1990's. At some point in late 2020 I started working on more sophisticated audiovisual soundscapes to reflect the post-conceptual themes of my embryonic full-time art career.
In early 2021 I chose to preserve and categorise this digital work on the embryonic NEAR Protocol blockchain - due to its proof of stake carbon neutral infrastructure.
With the decline and eventual fall of the NEAR cultural ecosystem, this period of work is now preserved - for provenance purposes mainly - on IPFS using AR Weave/AR Drive.
This unlinked SEO-dark gallery is a (heavily compressed) portfolio of some of that work - with a little bit of history and process info.
RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE?
ORGANIC ONLY
I describe my digital output as 'organic'. The primary reason for this is to distinguish it from generative/derivative AI.
The creative use of AI is a complex, contentious and nuanced issue. However, what essentially matters for me is the intention behind the creative act.
Personally - and except for the express purposes of juxtaposition - I choose to source and or create everything for myself from within the physical world when trying to communicate an intentional statement in a sensory aesthetic form.
So everything you see in my work is an IRL object or pattern that has then been digitally manipulated by my own act/agency.

FEEDBACK LOOPS
"Destroy a canvas and you make shapes" - Gustav Metzger
The artistic premise behind the FEEDBACK LOOPS project is to start with a single visual symbol of music/sound - the MUSIC GRAFFITI paintings - and then to explore a sequence of recursive phase space transformations between the sensory spaces of Sound & Vision, Music & Art and physical/digital forms.
FEEDBACK LOOPS artworks include FRACTAL and/or FRACTURED GROOVE digital art, PHREAK MUSIC soundscapes, audiovisual collages, augmented reality installations, etc

FEEDBACK LOOPS
"Destroy a canvas and you make shapes" - Gustav Metzger

"Generative AI will continue to fundamentally change the landscape for creatives, curators and consumers of all types of culture - eradicating access barriers in terms of time and increasing the supply of creative work by an almost infinite amount - to the extent that there will be free self-produced music, free art, free poetry, free graphic design…
...and of course 'free jazz'."

GROOVE RUNNER
DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC NOISE
"That's great...but I guess the question then is...Do Androids Dream of Electric Noise?"
Dan Quill / Zeitwarp - 'Future Music' Interview - Lisbon, Nov 2023

'DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC NOISE' is a series of recursive artworks including physical/digital installation, digital/video collage, PHREAK MUSIC 'Blip-Beats' and immersive art prints.
Inspired initially by a throwaway reply in an interview discussing the proliferation of both AI music and bot listeners on the major streaming platforms, the title of the series is a reference to Philip K Dick's 1968 sci-fi novel that became the basis of the 1982 film Bladerunner.
It was the first work in DI$PLACEMENT DISCO - a new series of work examining the intersection of 'Culture, Technology and Humanity' that has since been exhibited on three continents.

“This is the logical endgame of streamonomics: bots making music strictly and perhaps solely to be listened to by other bots.
The only human interaction would be your monthly subscription fee.”
