IN EVERY DREAM HOME

OBJECTS

Unique freestanding post-conceptual artistic display pieces for "Every Dream Home"...

The conceptual premise behind the series is a consideration of Transience, Obsolescence, Transformation, Significance, & Attachment.

Featuring a heavily textured distressed surface aesthetic created from multiple layers of enamel paints, rendered with fine silica and diamond dust.

Assembled and remixed from sustainable 'ready-made’ salvaged end-of-life materials - sourced under an enduring 'Re-Make / Re-Model' principle.

MUSIC GRAFFITI

PAINTINGS

MUSIC GRAFFITI is a series of immersive paintings exploring phase space transformations between Sound & Vision.

The paintings are a subjective compositional exploration of liminality between audio and visual forms. The genesis of each painting is a synesthetic visual interpretation of a sonic theme - essentially a reverse-engineered graphic score.

The stylised large black single crotchet (quarter note) echoes an embryonic monochrome ‘stencil culture' graffiti aesthetic, while functioning as both signal identifier and visual key.

The paintings feature textured three dimensional ‘architectural’ surfaces built up in layers of silica and paint.

STREET ART | ZEITWARP LIVE

INSTALLATION

In a 21st century landscape where the attention trade is the last game in town - and the hamster-wheel metrics of social media have become the ultimate arbiter of audience access - IRL Live Art remains a direct unmediated human alternative.

So - in addition to exhibiting in galleries and other formal events - we're taking work out onto the street and exhibiting wherever people already are.

Look out for post-conceptual installations and display objects coming to a shop window, airport, shopping mall or music festival near you...

ORGANIC DIGITAL ART

DIGITAL

'Collages' of real world physical objects sourced under the Re-Make / Re-Model principle, then digitised and remixed into 32 second audiovisual soundscape video art that has been exhibited across three continents.

The work is 'organic' in the sense that it is created as an intentional human act, without input from generative/derivative AI - or other automated processes.

LANDFILL ART

MODERN LIFE IS RUBBISH

The components in every single ZWRP / Zeitwarp piece have been salvaged, recycled, remixed and/or repurposed as part of an overarching 'Re-Make / Re-Model' principle. There are quite a lot of reasons for this - more >>>

The conceptual ZWRP/Zeitwarp universe is an examination of the subjective and objective reverberations of contemporary perspectives of both an halcyonic Ozymandian past and a dystopian Promethean future on present-day human existence.

Curation, attachment, transmission and significance are key factors and levers operating at a human level within the funnel of this examination. While the effects in terms of economics, society, politics and climate are interlinked and recursive.

Sourcing and repurposing discarded and 'end-of-life' components within the work is - at it's basic level - a micro effort to counter/greenwash/atone for the environmental impact of a 20th / 21st century privileged western life.

There is however more to it.

Transience, obsolescence, displacement and the fetish-isation / commodification of nostalgia have all now entered the chat.

Without further rehashing and revisiting these themes - like a three chord progression on a Ramones greatest hits LP - essentially the ZWRP adoption of a 'Re-Make / Re-Model' philosophy and its Duchampian echoes is a method to encompass the full spectrum of ideas that the work is trying to express - within the componentry of the work itself and the actual process of making it.

ZWRP IRL

CHOOSE LIFE

In September 2022 - over two months before Chat GPT launched - I gave a speech at a tech conference in Lisbon addressing the implications, opportunities and response of digital creatives to the emergence of generative AI culture. I probably should have listened to my own advice earlier: - >>>>

In the dopamine-driven fallout zone of post-GPT human culture the attention trade is pretty much the last game in town.

("Same as it ever was..." etc. - Salvador Dali might yet have a few tricks to teach everyone.)

If you've read/listened to any of my articles, interviews, speeches, podcasts etc you'll know that - as an early adopter of digital technologies since Web 1.0 - my views on AI are nuanced and involve a spectrum of thought beyond "machine bad". This is irrespective of any consequences for my own practice.

However - as a social media refusenik in a post-antediluvian open-API web - I've decided to make a choice and the ZWRP dimensional dial has shifted over towards IRL / physical work.

There'll always be some digital output - I still love making it - and art prints will still be available as '2D Spinoffs' from each project - however working in three dimensions will be the main focus for the time being.

"Generative AI will continue to fundamentally change the landscape for creatives, curators and consumers of all types of culture - eradicating access barriers in terms of time and increasing the supply of creative work by an almost infinite amount - to the extent that there will be free self-produced music, free art, free poetry, free graphic design…and of course 'free jazz'." -

SHOWROOM DUMMIES

So...yeah...what's with all the mannequins? Are they just cool retro robot musicians and cyberpunk sci-fi DJ's from the future?...or human analogues in the digital displacement narrative of the AI singularity?...Why not both ? - >>>>

________________________

Mannequins have become a substitute / placeholder / analogue for the human form through large parts of my work since the first one appeared mysteriously at home one day in 2021.

My partner - in both ZWRP & life - had brought it home and wanted it converted into a decorative standard lamp - which I eventually completed after some trial and error.

At the time I was also working on a piece for an upcoming exhibition on the theme of transhumanism and the AI singularity displacement narrative. I was looking at this headless mannequin and thought that it could become a motif to communicate the conceptual premise of the piece.

Although this wasn't the first time that I had been creating on the theme of AI and humanity - "AI vs HUMAN" was projected onto the Berlin skyline in July 2021 as part of the Gargantuakünst exhibition - it was the first time I was using a mannequin as a 'human replacement' - which seemed to resonate with the themes of the work.

Within a month the resulting digital piece 'HOMO TRANSRETRO' was not only a featured exhibit at the Rare Effect #3 Exhibition in Lisbon, but had also been displayed publicly on the big screen at the city's main Cais Do Sodré metro hub.

I started collecting more mannequins...the more alien and futurist the better - but broken, distressed and damaged examples of these were the best to fit with an Ozymandian / cyberpunk aesthetic.

Soon the studio was full of them. I began to incorporate them more intentionally within my artistic output as human analogues within a series of work - under the working title 'Displacement Di$co' - that focused on the Promethean tension between humanity and technology.

Finally committing to the life of a full-time creative turned out to be the endgame of a multiverse of convoluted career path spaghetti.

The penultimate and yet ultimately decisive step was a decade long odyssey into the labyrinth of the furniture business - where utopian visions collide with the realities of uniformity, mass production and climate impact.

It triggered a fascination and hunger for meaning, self-expression and sustainability - leading directly to experiments reworking existing objects and artefacts to represent subjective perspectives, observations and experiences.

The work eventually coalesced around ideas and themes that reflected my lived experience and evolving philosophy to the point where the two were inseparable.

Then you just have to go ahead and make it.

The Clash were responding lyrically to being critically dismissed for lacking formal music technique & training in an NME review by Charles Shaar Murray.

Similarly, ‘Garage Art’ perhaps captures the essence of being outside of a 'tent' that will always value three years of art school over three plus decades of thinking about the nature of objective and subjective existence in an aesthetic sensory fashion.

It perhaps also speaks to the quantitative vanity arithmetic of social media as a form of qualitative proof...

Yes, social media is pernicious, manipulative, unreliable, addictive etc. Moreover it's also owned by some of the richest narcissists on the planet - (plus ca change / "meet the new boss" / "same as it ever was..." etc).

With the algorithms rewarding engagement and 'time on platform', and in an economy where attention mining is an almost fundamental requirement, it's easy to become committed to chasing the dopamine dragon in a hamster wheel existence.

Let's face it, it's probably a bad thing

The problem of course is that the vanity metrics of 'social proof' are often the key to external perception and - in the case of artists, bands, businesses, whatever - the literal difference between success and failure.

Well - if you've got this far - then my hope is that you will judge this 'book' not by the quantity of its algorithmic social footprint but instead by the quality of the 'content'.

Which is a long way of saying "I'm not playing" - or more specifically..."I'm not prioritising Zuck or Elon's game any more". So - maybe until thee is a decentralised co-operative alternative - no, we are no longer active on any social media - passive...yep occasionally...but active...no.

Life really is too short.
