"Art without meaning is just decoration. The art is in the idea."

RICK RUBIN*

Given the lack of any kind of formal art training, everything that I produce would normally be categorised as ‘outsider art’ or perhaps more accurately “art brut” (raw art) by the art establishment.

I prefer the term ‘Garage Art’.

( *Once again -despite all the Instagram posts that testify to it - there is no actual verifiable proof that Rick Rubin ever actually said this - however it's a nice quote, and it's definitely the sort of thing he might have said.)

So...what's with all the mannequins?

Mannequins have become a substitute for the human form through large parts of my work since the first one appeared mysteriously at home one day a couple of years ago. My wife had brought it home and wanted it turned into a decorative standard lamp - which I did.

At the time I was working on a piece for an upcoming exhibiton on the theme of migration in all its forms, including 'trasnhumanism'. I was looking at this headless mannequin and thought that it could become a conduit to communicate both the conceptual and moral duality at the heart transhumanism, and the eternal paradox of retrofuturism.

Within a month the resulting piece 'HOMO TRANSRETRO' was not only a featured exhibit at the Rare Effect #3 Exhibition in Lisbon, but had also been displayed publicly on the big screen at the city's main Cais Do Sodré metro hub.

I started collecting more mannequins...the more alien and futurist the better - but distressed and damaged examples of these were the best. Soon the studio was full of them. I began to incorporate them within my artistic output, particularly as symbols of an Ozymandian retrofuturism that was becoming increasingly central to my themes.

Work is released in distinct thematic series with a consistent aesthetic. Individual series touch multiple nodes, straddling the threshold between physical, digital, live and immersive forms.

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE?

ORGANIC DIGITAL ART

I describe my digital output as 'organic'. The primary reason for this is to distinguish it from generative/derivative AI.

The creative use of AI is a complex, contentious and nuanced issue. However, what essentially matters for me is the intention behind the creative act.

Personally - and except for the express purposes of juxtaposition - I choose to source and or create everything for myself from within the physical world when trying to communicate an intentional statement in a sensory aesthetic form.

So everything you see in my work is an IRL object or pattern that has then been digitally manipulated by my own act/agency.

"Destroy a canvas and you make shapes" - Gustav Metzger

The artistic premise behind the FEEDBACK LOOPS project is to start with a single visual symbol of music/sound - the MUSIC GRAFFITI paintings - and then to explore a sequence of recursive phase space transformations between the sensory spaces of Sound & Vision, Music & Art and physical/digital forms.

FEEDBACK LOOPS artworks include FRACTAL and/or FRACTURED GROOVE digital art, PHREAK MUSIC soundscapes, audiovisual collages, augmented reality installations, etc

The GLITCH BREAKS variations are a series of remixes of the original painting images into both visual MP4 video artworks and physical Art prints.

THE NO$TALGIA SHOW

‘The NO$TALGIA SHOW’ is a long-term series of physical and digital artworks examining Transience, Obsolescence, Transformation, Retro-Utopianism and the Nostalgia/NO$TALGIA phenomenon.

The conceptual thread of The NO$TALGIA SHOW is that the emergence of nostalgia as a fully commoditised emotional and cultural phenomenon has ripple effects that reverberate - both subjectively & objectively - through culture, society, climate and politics.

Artworks include installation, digital art, audiovisual video collage and augmented reality activated art prints.

“We were partying hard at the Wilde Möhre Festival near Drebkau in Germany...people danced to the loud and pumping electric music...two pieces of Zeitwarp‘s music note art works were hanging on the wooden walls...majestic and mystically lit up by the flashes of the disco lights and stroboscopes.

Next day, hung over, I bought both paintings...”

MUSIC GRAFFITI

MUSIC GRAFFITI is a series of textured immersive 'phygital' music paintings. The genesis of each painting is a visual interpretation of a musical idea or thought.

Beyond that it is an exploration of a sequence of recursive phase space transformations between the sensory spaces of Sound & Vision, Music & Art and physical/digital forms.

Each MUSIC GRAFFITI has a corresponding digital art remix and PHREAK MUSIC soundscape that are generated recursively using either audio or visual seeds from the previous transformation.

GLITCH BREAKS

GLITCH BREAKS are audiovisual remix artworks derived from a physical MUSIC GRAFFITI painting using the FEEDBACK LOOPS methodology.

A painting is scanned into digital format, which is then re-scanned using visual synthesis to create an audio signature or call-sign - which (qualitatively) determines the musical key of the original painting.

This key signature is then combined with a suite of audio stems in the same key to create an aural PHREAK MUSIC soundscape.

"The quintessence of musical dynamism and tonality captured in a still image.

The perfectly delineated single note, itself filled with energy and infinite potential, against the horizontal lines of time.

This picture fascinates and enthrals me."

DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC NOISE

"That's great...but I guess the question then is...Do Androids Dream of Electric Noise?"

Dan Quill / Zeitwarp - 'Future Music' Interview - Lisbon, Nov 2023

'DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC NOISE' is a series of recursive artworks including physical/digital installation, digital/video collage, PHREAK MUSIC 'Blip-Beats' and immersive art prints.

Inspired initially by a throwaway reply in an interview discussing the proliferation of both AI music and bot listeners on the major streaming platforms, the title of the series is a reference to Philip K Dick's 1968 sci-fi novel that became the basis of the 1982 film Bladerunner.

It was the first work in DI$PLACEMENT DISCO - a new series of work examining the intersection of 'Culture, Technology and Humanity' that has since been exhibited on three continents.

The only human interaction would be your monthly subscription fee.”

...and of course 'free jazz'."
