TALKING HEAD
"Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like uh, your opinion, man."
The Big Lebowski
CULTURE | TECHNOLOGY | HUMANITY
In 2021 I started talking in public. At the time the implications of blockchain, the emergence of XR/immersive technology and the arrival of embryonic generative artificial intelligence signalled a period of rapid innovation and disruption across creative industries on all sides of the equation.
As an early adopter of all of the above - and as a full-time creative with a thematic focus on transience, obsolescence, and transformation - both my curiosity and my attention converged on the intersection of culture, technology and humanity.
A series of podcast guest slots were followed by public speaking engagements, workshopping and broadcast appearances.
"WHAT IF I TOLD YOU..."
Six weeks before Chat-GPT launched I was asked to deliver a presentation on blockchain culture at a tech conference in Lisbon.
This was at the end of the 'Summer of Dall-E 2' and I chose to concentrate my remarks instead on the response for creators, curators and consumers of culture to the opportunities, disruption and implications of the emergent technology of generative AI.
This became something of a theme going forward...
CREATIVE THERAPY
Three key themes emerged from that first talk which then formed the basis of three separate streams:
'DALL-E 2 Ate My Lunch' - A survival guide for creators, curators and consumers of culture in the accelerating new realities of the machine age.
'Create or Die - How to survive modern life'
Creativity as a personal survival technique for the apparent meaninglessness of human existence in the 21st century.
'The Economy of Scales' - The music business has always been a "cruel and shallow money trench" with a relentless determination to cannibalise its creative workforce. Streaming and generative AI are just the latest assaults.
So how do we as music lovers stage an intervention?
SAME AS IT EVER WAS
From a human perspective, advances in technology can appear to be accelerating beyond the event horizon of our imagination at a bewildering rate of change.
My talk 'DALL-E 2 Ate My Lunch' builds on the thoughts and action points from that original discussion in September 2022 laying out a roadmap of how to meet and adapt to the disorientation of disruptive technologies.
DISCO-TOPIA
“Of course one must go on ‘ making a living’ somehow -
but the essential thing is to make a life”
'Immediatism' - Hakim Bey
“Why is Art important?”
I was once asked this as a (totally unprepared) podcast guest.
The question made me focus on the disconnect between the relative (un)importance of art in a world full of increasing inequality, anxiety and uncertainty in terms of politics, economics and climate - where over a billion people exist in multidimensional poverty - and the potential of creativity as a therapeutic tool for navigating personal and collective circumstances on a subjective level.
'Create or Die' is a guide to harnessing and exploring creativity as a survival tool to modern existence.
Just ask Nietzsche...
ROUGH TRADE
The soul-destroying transformation of music into disposable content, and the dystopian transfer of wealth from musicians to the owners of technology platforms continues to accelerate away beyond the event horizon.
More music is being listened to than ever before and yet even successful artists with record deals, management, and festival appearances are struggling to survive.
Meanwhile streaming has been revealed as nothing more than a fantasy revenue 'stream' for the majority of musicians.
This is even before generative AI entered the chat...
'The Economy of Scales' is a DIY guide to a personal mindset and set of individual actions that values and supports music and musicians in a poorly distributed economy of abundance.
WORKSHOPS & MENTORING
Cultural outreach and education have become a key part of the Zeitwarp mission statement under The Caymana initiative.
Compared to the 'broadcast' element of public speaking, creative workshops and group mentoring offer an opportunity to interact and impact/learn directly in collaboration with smaller audiences.
The themes include the central principles of the public talks but addressed in a more hands-on experimental fashion. However the curriculum also extends into a broader spectrum of subjects within the culture/technology/humanity triangle.

“We asked Dan (Zeitwarp) to come to Lisbon to deliver a workshop on his artistic practice and techniques using modern technologies (augmented reality & AI) inside his process of artwork creation.
The workshop went very well…these were a mixture of artists and technologists interested in learning about the technology and practice. The workshop attracted people from inside of Lisbon and from south of the city with some people traveling over 50km.
We will definitely be working with Dan again as we continue this collaboration between our entity and the artist and would recommend anyone else to do so.”

FOR THE CULTURE
'The Caymana' has evolved from a simple way to help touring musicians to save money into an outreach, education and creative support mission for grassroots culture.
The idea now is to speak about and showcase what we have been doing with The Caymana to draw attention to the economic pressures of being a touring musician and to inspire others to run their own DIY schemes as part of an informal network of free to stay 'crash pads' for touring musicians.
